In  stinging rebuke to President Trump, Democrat Doug Jones won the open senate seat in Alabama. The victory by Mr. Jones, a former prosecutor, could have drastic consequences on the national level, blocking Republicans’ legislative agenda in Washington and for the first time opening a potential path for Democrats to capture the Senate in 2018. President Trump broke with much of his party to fully embrace Mr. Moore, who twice was removed as Alabama’s Chief Justice for violating federal law. Moore also faced multiple accusations of sexual improprieties in the run up to the election, but claimed his accusers were lying. Trump worked to bolster support for Moore in the closing days of the campaign, only to see his favored candidate lose.
