Local news and the Associated Press report Mesa County citizens have been finding fliers promoting the white supremacist group the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) in their mailboxes. The fliers promote the “Loyal White Knights KKK,” contain white supremacist and anti-gay sentiments and urge people to call a number to inquire about KKK membership. Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center said these kind of KKK recruitment efforts have picked up in the last few months. Despite widespread publicity about the fliers, so far no Grand Junction or Mesa County elected officials have publicly condemned the fliers or the racist sentiments they promote. If you get one of these fliers, please call the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office to report it, so they can document it. If you’d like Grand Junction’s mayor to speak out on this issue, you can find her City email address at this link. The County Commissioners’ contact information is here.
