A recently-released confidential transcript of a phone call that took place in April between President Trump and Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte, reveals that Mr. Trump praised Mr. Duterte for “doing an unbelievable job on the drug problem” in his country. Mr. Duterte has had death squads gun down approximately 7,000 Filipino citizens in the streets of his country since June, 2016, in a systematic program of extrajudicial killings. On June 30, 3016, Duterte urged members the Philippine public to kill drug addicts, saying, “If you know of any addicts, go ahead and kill them yourself as getting their parents to do it would be too painful.” Human rights organizations say this statement could constitute criminal incitement to commit murder.
